Re: “Mackerel Wars

By the way, such an opinion is also advocated by Norwegian NGOs - Bellona and Zero.

Re: “Mackerel Wars

In my opinion, the history of cod wars may be successfully used by Iceland in order to widen its' fishing boundaries. Such precedents may serve as useful diplomatic measures in international affairs, and in this particular case in the relations of Iceland and the United Kingdom.

Re: “Ticks suck

Great article, these are nasty beasts for sure! You never mentioned the “bullseye” rash that often accompanies a bite from an infected tick. Also the local ticks can carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever which is similar to Lyme Disease and if left untreated, will definitely make you late for dinner.
The discovery of Lyme Disease is a real feel good story despite how serious it is. A group of neighborhood mothers in Old Lyme just could not believe that all these children in the area were coming down with serious cases of what was thought to be a rare form of juvenile arthritis.
The anecdotal information these parents gathered made the initial link between tick bites and their children’s illnesses. Local doctors and researchers from a major university then carried out systematic studies which conclusively proved how Lyme Disease is transmitted. Shows you what a big difference a few normal people can make!

Re: “Conrad Schapansky – The Man From Carrot River

Congrats Conrad - but you weren't the first - Capri Studios won B-grade October 2010 and followed up winning the Showdown in April 2011.
Possibly others have shared this success?

This article is terribly written. I wrote a 2 page response, but since I have an editor they said keep it simple and stick to the facts.

Pique - you guys need an editor.

Re: “You can bank on this...

To the poster who says, "Welcome to the UK.......we've been there for years and look where it has got us": I am AMAZED that there hasn't been a HUGE public backlash against the banks there. How come? At the very least start a Facebook page that gets everyone riled up and pissed off. See Canada's backlash here - www.facebook.com/BoycottRoyalBankOfCanada

Re: “Whistler village facing incremental erosion

The Loblaws is a great addition, as the increased competition in groceries will hopefully help bring prices down to that more in the Sea to Sky corridor, not to mention will allow me to avoid the horrible parking lot in the Nester's plaza.

As for the village becoming a place for tourists, well it is, as a local, the parking fiasco has made pushed me to go in to the village less and less (I now park in lot 6,7 or 8 when I ride avoiding the village altogether). I have been observing the increase in commercial vacancies, as due to the ridiculous rent prices, we have pushed away the potential for Whistlerites to start up small shops and restaurants, which give the village it's charm and character in exchange for more franchises and chains which don't have the same feel. There is little sense of "community" in the village anymore and that is something that needs to be addressed.

Then there is the issue of WB charging more and more for their programs such as ski school has gone up making it harder on local families, the spirit pass really doesn't provide any benefit from the early bird full season pass, no discount now on a bike park pass if you had a season's pass, which also shows a lack of respect for the local community.

Re: “The penny drops

It's worth dollars to me to see them gone. BTW it's the final total that should be rounded not individual items. Lets say goodbye to the nickel too!

Re: “Whistler village facing incremental erosion

A new Loblaws is great news for Whistlerites that are on a budget. More competition should get Whistler grocery prices more in line with those in the lower mainland. In the lower mainland you'll also find marketplace IGA stores. Given that IGA has rebranded as "Marketplace" and the store in whistler is in "Marketplace" one has to wonder if they've branded the whole chain as a spin-off of the Whistler Branding. In other marketplace stores you'll find weekly sale flyers, check it out: http://www.marketplaceiga.com/savings-prom… Not available in Whistler, though... for whistler folks its full rip-off, all the way

Re: “Whistler village facing incremental erosion

Unfortunately, in my mind at least, the Village really is "just a place for tourists". As long time residents my family and I have little want or need to go into Whistler Village to search for parking and fight through the tourists. Living in a resort community, I think we all understand where our dinner dangles but I know I'm not alone when I say that I can do without going into Whistler Village much at all anymore. Just a bit too "Disneyland" for me.

Re: Transparency Please & Buyer Beware...

The difference in what the client saw as an advertised price and the total charged is 64%. People do expect and accept some charges but this must have been perceived as onerous. In my opinion a simple solution is to advertise a realistic price.

Re: “Letters to the editor for the week of March 28th

Thanks Leslie, I will now quote the "No person shall permit any animal to be running at large in the Resort Municipality" when I see a young child running at large in the community, as uncontrolled kids in public places piss me off.

Get a life.

Re: “Awesome in the real sense

Thank you for writing such an accurate portrayal of the Journey of Nishiyuu. I think the only thing I would have you change, is using the word "protest". From anything that is written by any of the walkers, organizers, or supporters, none have used that word. This is a Journey for Unity, and also many, many, personal journeys. It is very positive. I have followed the Earth Walkers (on FB) for the last 6 weeks and have come to have an appreciation of First Nation culture that I have never had an opportunity to have before. Bearing witness to all of the love and respect, the support the walkers have received as they have traveled through the various communities, and the overall worldwide inspiration they have brought to so many. As a non-indigenous woman, I hope to be able to continue this journey, learning more, gaining insight into First Nation culture that has so much to teach us. I also want to learn more about the Seven Fires prophecy. I am feeling pulled to that.

Re: “Awesome in the real sense

Thank you Cathryn Atkinson for tracking this amazing story and bringing it to the attention of an outdoor community that might have an added appreciation of the rigors and glories of this journey. This Journey is about exuberance, faith, community and more, much more.. it is about dreams, legends, and language; it is epic in no trite sense of the word. There is an amazing FB page through which people have been creating a powerfully engaged support community from various corners of the globe. Join the Journey of Nishiyuu and share the photos, the parents, the supporters, the siblings, the walkers... the Inuit, the Cree people of Istchee Eeyou, the Algonquins, ... as they work to define trails, help each other's teenage children, set up walltents, organize protocol, fiddle and jig, ice fish.. and walk, walk walk....

Re: “Awesome in the real sense

KisheManitou bless you for covering the Journey of Nishiyuu, an inspiring passionate story which this nishnab sitting here has followed online since it was announced. A handful of corporations own 90% of Canadian mainstream media, and those same corporations and harper's conservatives serve each other because of mutual interest in tarsands, mining, logging, pipelines. A gov't controlled media is not freedom of the press. Journalistic ethics is all but gone now in mainstream media as it's a tool of propaganda. I'll be making the 500 km trip to greet the walkers on Parliament Hill scheduled for March 25.
