Doug Ryan, can you please let the asphalt plant issue die. Enough money and time has been wasted on this issue. People who live and rent in the Cheakamus already got subsidized housing, so please stop complaining about a guy trying to run a business that was there long before that area was built, not to mention FULLY DISCLOSED ON YOUR DISCLOSURE STATEMENT. IF you have a problem move or otherwise be quiet.
I think the sewage plant is worse, you guys are crazy.
Just an FYI, expect SONY to block used games, not Microsoft. Sony filed for the patent after all.
Good going Whistler Blackcomb! For such surveys, you can also use SoGoSurvey, the best online survey tool.
Twin engine helicopters encounter catastrophic failures at approximately the same rate as single engine machines do in Canada. Depending on the model,it is not always possible to maintain flight on one engine. In many cases the first engine follows the second engine to the scene of the crash. Remember a twin engine machine still has one gear box and one tail rotor.
Love this piece! Yohann truly is a special whistler local!
A couple of points about this interesting article. Not "every account" said that Richard III had a hunchback and in fact, the scoliosis revealed here would not have resulted in a hunchback although one shoulder might well have been higher than the other.
And Richard is accepted as being very progressive. In his one Parliament he instituted bail, outlawed benevolences (forced "gifts" to the king), & he improved justice for the poor, to name just a few items.
Eric,
from my understanding and seeing choppers landing there, the helipad is approved by transport Canada but for dual engines helicopter only. The thing is there is not that many dual engines around the valley and they are not available all the time so single engines pilot still have to drive out of town. It is still far away but unfortunately, transport canada has a valid point regarding the danger of landing a single engine helicopter at the clinic. There is more life at risk if an incident happens. I agree with you with the stupidity of this situation but the real problem here is not being able to have more dual engines in such a montaneous environment.
Can't believe that Transport Canada still haven't given the go for the helipad by the clinic. They try to avoid a possible incident, meanwhile life treatening situations are still flown outside of town and ambulance ride. How much longer does this pratice takes?

^^ It is discussed in the article but there is no mention of SAR funding in the May 31, 2012 proposal to BC Parks. The risk management matrix identifies the potential for increasing accident rates but the mitigation action only lists: "Rescue equipment, maps, and first aid supplies will be kept in each hut."
There is also no line item in the costing tables specifying an allowance for SAR funding/support.
This is a great article that needs to be shared. If stories could be told to see what all schools are doing, it would be an excellent way to learn from each other.
Having everyone aware of the issues and being encouraged to tell is one of the important attributes towards 'Making a Difference'. I commend the students in our country and beyond for stepping up and making that shift in perspective. If we all step up as global citizens, a change WILL occur.

^^ Spearhead Hut project has taken this into account; see the Feature article from Fall '11 in the PIQUE. Part of their proposal includes proper funding for SAR, increased education, etc. Keep in mind that the increases in injuries above are from sledders, and are already increasing regardless. Spearhead Huts will be located in a zone that is touring-only, in Garibaldi Park, where there is no sledding permitted.
As stated: "There's no doubt about it, if you look at the statistics you can see that search and rescue is just a numbers game," he said. "When you put more people out there you're going to have more calls."
With the proposed Spearhead hut system and inevitable increase in backcountry users drawn to the huts, additional SAR resources will no doubt be required. I hope Spearhead hut promoters have taken into account. I think every dollar raised for the hut construction should be matched to cover the costs of additional SAR support.
Condolences
tab will be west coasting at same time...?

Poor Pup? 5 years old. Oxygen to keep her alive? If thats the case put the 'poor' thing down. Dog attacking people all day? I don't think any one else was there all day.
Good to see we also have so many experts in our community too, I feel safe knowing that when Im getting mauled by a dog you will be there to show me how to deal with it. Your all so brave.
Re: “Bureaucracy inaction; lives at risk”
It's good to know we're now looking at health expenses as business revenue. That's a great idea! Maybe we can make a "business case" by calculating the cost of dumping a few wrongful death lawsuits at the door of VCH? Or maybe VCH is wondering how much they could get for bodies on some sort of black market? I didn't know our health providers were now in the business of making money off injuries, shite care and death...
