Re: “Hops company dreaming big

Hops might be a nice addition to potatoes. grew hops on the side of the shed many years back up the valley and were hit with the mildew on the leaves...wonder if it's still in the valley?

Re: “Just say no — really loudly — to palm oil

Earth hour is the biggest environmentalism global hoax. Its doing Nothing!!! Literally. No environmental issues are solved. Its nothing but people sitting in a dark room for a hour feeling smug about how wonderful they are for doing their part to save the planet.

You know what would be useful? Inventing something while the lights are on and the machines are running that can help the earth.

Earth hour just kicks the can with our environmental issues in it down the road. I personally cant wait for North Korea to start world war 3. Then I wont be subjected again to such idiocy as people doing nothing but smelling their own farts in the dark one hour out of the year feeling proud of their global contribution.

Re: “Rahn named Sommelier of the Year

Congratulations to Sam... A rad girl and badass sommelier. Somm of the Year is also a first for Whistler... Samantha is now one of only two women to have received the Award. The other woman was Barb Philip in 2003 (first Western Canadian to achieve the Master of Wine and is the only female MW in the country, now Old World buyer at BCLDB.)

Re: “A wine list that puts customers first

Much of your thoughts here are great (especially lamenting the distributor list), however in the US our wine pricing in under attack and therefore the way a restaurant makes ends meet via wine prices has come under attack as well.

I realize that retail wine is much different in Canada than here, but the Guigal Cotes du Rhone can be found via winesearcher site at prices ranging from $10.99 a bottle to $13.99. A restaurant does not have the volume or need to purchase the "deal" on certain wines to be even in the same league as retail. So what was once a "double retail is a fair price", has become very difficult to quantify these days. Plus the old retail mark-up of 50% or more is long gone. Wine retail mark-up now starts at 20% and I know of some closer to 15%.

Re: “Epicurious

It was good to know about that. But I would just like to mention, as I was browsing some sites, I found out that there are sites that were very upright in giving tips or advice in making some recipes. Some of them are The Salad site, Wikichicken, Gourmetrecipe and Gourmandia.

Re: “Table scraps

couldn't resist a few links from 'the foodnetwork.ca'..this one got huge reviews from kids and is healthier too (haven't tried but looks so yummy):
smackroni and cheese http://www.foodnetwork.ca/recipes/smackaro…
...and for other recipes of mac n' cheese from the same site (right up there with sheppard's pie, poutine, chau sui bau (bbq pork buns, steamed), a good curry and of course, meatloaf as ultimate comfort food contenders:

Good Luck Dave, anyone who pulls out of the Blacks machine can't be afraid of anything, as you've already seen the worst.
