The Sea to Sky Campaign School, held this past weekend to encourage more women to run for politics, has been declared a success by its organizer.
Catherine Rockandel, of the Rockandel and Associates facilitation firm based in Squamish, said the May 28 school went "really well," drawing 50 women in total including five from Whistler when only two had initially registered.
"All of the women who attended said it was an excellent event," she said. "Everybody took something away in terms of learning and elected leaders that attended said they had renewed passion and vigour for leadership in the Corridor."
The school, which had attendants such as West Vancouver Mayor Pamela Goldsmith-Jones offering their own advice and experiences on life in politics, drew people of all ages, going all the way down to 16 years old. Rockandel said the school was enough to draw an interest in running out of at least two people there - one who's interested in running for Whistler council, the other as a trustee for the Sea to Sky School District.
"There were a lot of women who talked about having a more active role in their community in terms of leadership in the community," she said. "That's really the first stepping stone to involvement in politics is involvement in community-based organizations."
