The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) issued a cougar alert for the Alpine neighbourhood on Thursday (July 11).

The Conservation Officer Service (COS) reported an active cougar spotted around Matterhorn and Rainbow Drives. Officials say the animal has been pursuing pets, particularly cats, and is asking residents to be alert and keep pets indoors. Children should also be supervised outside.

If you spot a cougar, officials recommend you stay calm, never run or turn your back, make yourself as large as possible, and back out of the area and seek shelter.

The RMOW is also asking residents to report cougar sightings to COS at 1-877-952-7277.
