Mitchell remains mum Independent MLA David Mitchell is remaining non-committal about his future political allegiances following the B.C. Reform Party's annual convention last weekend in Kamloops. "It looks like the Reform Party is taking a moderate, mainstream approach and I'm very pleased to see that," Mitchell said this week. "I'm pretty encouraged about it. The more I hear about the resolutions they made the more encouraged I am." Mitchell addressed the founding meeting of the West Vancouver-Garibaldi constituency of the B.C. Reform Party two weeks ago. He told members to resist those who want to steer the party to the right and urged them to seek the middle ground. However, he wouldn't make any commitments about his political future this week. "I have been serving as an Independent and I think I have been very effective serving my constituents as an independent and my constituents have been very supportive," he said. Potton search unsuccessful Last weekend’s search for Ann Marie Potton, the 24-year-old Whistler resident who disappeared Oct. 8, 1994, was unsuccessful. The family of the St. Catherines, Ont. woman and more than 75 volunteers combed Whistler Mountain looking for any trace of the missing woman, but came up empty handed. Pod, Toulouse step down Steve Podborski has stepped down as Blackcomb's manager of special events, race and public relations to spend more time on his private business interests, including developing a revolutionary new ski boot. It is anticipated Podborski will continue to be associated with Blackcomb. Also, Terry (Toulouse) Spence has stepped down as director of adult race programs. Of bears, dogs and bikes The Jennifer Jones Whistler Bear Foundation will be raising funds at Marketplace tomorrow, June 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. In order to help pay for bear relocation, serum and education the foundation will be selling hot dogs and juice for $2 outside the TD Bank. Last Saturday a group of 25 women paid $25 each and cycled from Squamish to Whistler, with all of the proceeds from the ride going to the Jennifer Jones Whistler Bear Foundation. Fenwick heads library board Anne Fenwick is the new chair of the Whistler Public Library’s board of trustees, taking over from Faye Atkinson. Fenwick was elected unanimously at the trustees’ June 7 meeting. Atkinson resigned as chair when she moved to Saskatchewan. She had served as a trustee for four years and as chair since January. Marlene Siemens takes over the vice chair position, vacated by Fenwick, by acclamation. Also, Sharon Broach became the board’s newest trustee, bringing the number of trustees back up to nine. Municipal councillor Bill Murray was recently appointed as the municipal representative on the library board.
