I think the markets are a fantastic idea! It is an amazing opportunity for new artists AND the local shops. The markets will encourage people to come to Whistler to shop, It will bring more tourists to Whistler and attract people with an interest in arts and crafts creating business FOR the galleries.
It is very ‘short sighted’ to think the shops will be influenced in a negative way!
A little bit of competition will be good for the shops because there is a reason the majority of locals buy their groceries from Squarmish and other things from Wallmart. By closing the opportunity for young artists you direct people towards large corporate businesses and we all know what happens to the local businesses if this happens.
If the shops are not doing well and that is due to the economy not the fault of the young artists! The local shop owners are not interested in selling the items we make anyway because the artists are not established yet. Everyone has to start from somewhere including the artists who sell in your galleries. However when the artists become established and start to sell their items at a higher price this is another way the local shops will benefit!
In the Olympics the price of rent for houses went up. It was not necessary. Look at what happened after the Olympics and what is happening now! Land owners are still trying to rent out their properties for way too much. The difference is...workers in Whistler can’t afford those prices and now the prices are slowly going down from $700 per room to $500.
Jim Davidson’s problem is his rent. High rent is the cost of having a business in Whistler. Maybe someone is getting richer somewhere and they might need to cut down. Maybe the shop owners need to take a stand on the ridiculous prices of rent.
