Debbie Smythe has taken on the job of co-ordinating community relations and volunteer activities in Whistler for the Vancouver-Whistler 2010 Bid Corporation.

"The Bid Corporation is committed to both involve and inform residents and businesses as plans for the bid move forward," said Don Calder, chief executive officer of the bid corporation. "We are delighted that Debbie Smythe has joined the bid team to assist us in our community relations and volunteer activities in Whistler."

Smythe, a long-time resident of Whistler, brings experience in a number of community-based volunteer and fund-raising activities as well as an extensive network of contacts. Her immediate tasks include volunteer recruitment, putting the finishing touches on the bid corporation’s soon-to-be-opened Whistler office, and implementation of a number of community involvement and information programs.

"The legacies of hosting an Olympic event are significant: improved facilities, infrastructure enhancement, community spirit, economic opportunities, youth and sport development, and international recognition," said Smythe. "I am excited about these opportunities for Whistler and our neighbouring communities."

Smythe has held various positions in Whistler, including conference manager for the Delta Mountain Inn, general manage of the Whistler Conference Centre, director of sales and manager of Le Chamois and director of sales and marketing for Powder Resort Properties. She has been actively involved as both a volunteer and board member with a number of groups and organizations including: the Community School Liaison Committee, Blackcomb Ski Club, Parent Advisory Committees, Whistler Swim Club and the Whistler Centre for Business and the Arts.
