EXPORT ‘A’ EXTREME SKIERCROSS AT SUNSHINE!

Banff, Alberta

— Sunshine Village held true to its name today, as Canada’s best skiers competed in the 1st Annual Export ‘A’ Extreme Skiercross under blue skies and warm sun. Athletes navigated a course laden with jumps, whoops, banked turns, rollers and more, while battling for a $15,000 cash purse.

Thirty-two men and eight women advanced from this morning’s Time Trials to compete in this afternoon’s Skiercross. Rob Bosinger, National Men’s Downhill Team member, took home first place and $3,200. Roman Torn and Scott Wearmouth placed second and third respectively. Kim McKnight captured first and $2,000 for the women, followed by Wendy Lumby in second place and Banff local Candice Drouin in third.

Rob Bosinger fared well on the fast, technical course. "The course was great and flowed well", said Bosinger. He knew he was in the lead when he passed his fellow racers just after the first hip jump, where he caught some good air-time. "Navigating this course required high-concentration, but it was definitely a fun race."

"It was an incredible course, and very intimidating at first", said McKnight, a four-year member of Team Canada and former Great Britain Olympic Team member. "The race was super tight coming out of the first set of doubles and heading into the first table-top feature ", said McKnight of her final heat. "I could feel other racers’ skis on the backs of my own, but I came out of it ahead of the others."

Modeled after the snowboard discipline of BoardercrossÒ, Skiercross features heats of four skiers racing head-to-head at high speeds down the course at the same time. The first skier across the finish line wins the heat. Skiercross is part of the new generation of competitive skiing, attracting skiers from different disciplines and backgrounds.

Sixty-seven men and eleven women participated in this morning’s Time Trials, where each competitor raced individually against the clock. Roman Torn, a member of the National Men’s Downhill Team, qualified first with a time of 56.88, followed by fellow team-mate Rob Bosinger with a time of 57.42. Kim McKnight lead the women in Time Trials with a time of 62.41, followed by Wendy Lumby with a time of 62.73.
