From the ashes of the popular May Day festival – an annual celebration of local businesses that went the way of the dodo last year as the spring season got busier and busier – has arisen another local festival: Whistler Discovery Day, or as some people are calling it, "May Day in June."

On June 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Whistler businesses and the chamber of commerce are inviting the community see what’s new, catch up with friends and neighbours, and enjoy local entertainment. There will be festival centres in every business neighbourhood, from Function Junction to Nesters, each with its own theme and activities.

Creekside merchants are working on a family carnival at Alpha Lake Park, and Whistler’s activity operators will show off at the Interactivity Centre in Mountain Square.

The Howe Sound Community Futures Society is helping to fund this community event, and businesses are also kicking in with draw prizes of goods and services.

There will also be fashion shows, demonstrations by community groups like the Tae Kwon Do club, kids’ activities, and in-store specials everywhere you go.

The municipality is offering free transit for the day, and encouraging employees and participants to leave their cars at home. They have also given participating businesses a Bylaw Exemption Status to allow them to get a little more creative with their store fronts, décor and displays.
