In Howe Sound, long heralded as one of the top windsurfing bays on the entire West Coast, a new wind-powered sport is taking off. More and more kitesurfers are discovering Squamish, as more and more people are discovering kitesurfing.

Basically put, a kitesurfer straps his or her feet onto a small surf board, and is towed around the sound by a giant kite than can actually pull you up and out of the water and carry you along for long distances.

To promote their sport, the Squmaish Kitesurfing Society is hosting KiteFest 2001 on Aug. 18, with competitions, prizes, demonstrations and lessons.

The competitions including the Long Distance Expert Course, Down Wind Beginner Course, Jump the Marker With Style Course, Hang Time contest, and Body Drag Time Trials for beginners.

There will be a draw to win a Naish kite worth $1,500.

The day starts with a Captain’s Meeting at 11 a.m. There will be a $10 entry free.
