Whistler number one, two more times

Yes, we’re top of the heap, king of the hill, we’re ranked number one again as a winter sport destination.

This time the rankings are in the prestigious Skiing magazine and in Transworld Snowboarding’s travel guide.

Skiing magazine’s November issue awarded Whistler-Blackcomb top spot in its annual ranking of the 10 best destination ski resorts in North America.

It’s the fourth consecutive year the local slopes have won the accolade.

Transworld Snowboarding, in its first-ever ranking, said Whistler was the best over-all snowboarding destination in North America.

"To receive ratings and third party endorsements from a combination of consumers and the media is the kind of profile and publicity we can’t purchase," said Barrett Fisher, vice president marketing strategy and business development at Tourism Whistler.

"(We) continue to face challenges with the US crisis and with the economy and certainly this a good news story that gives us a positive message to promote."

Skiing magazine editors said Whistler has it all: "If you haven’t yet been there, you’ve at least heard the tales: Two huge mountains. A gluttonous amount of terrain for every level of skier. A breathtaking lake—diotted valley. And the resort’s famed centrepiece a lively, nouvelle-Alpine pedestrian village that many visitors think is what they’ve actually come to see."

Transworld’s guide, a kind of snowboarder’s bible, said Whistler-Blackcomb offered insane terrain, great powder and great nightlife.

The riders who rated the resort fall into the category of hardcore boarders riding about 30 days a year with an average of 4.6 seasons of experience.

The publication, due to hit newsstands Oct 16, is the largest in the world catering to the "out-of-bounds" snowboard set.

Last month Whistler was awarded top spot in Sports Illustrated for Women and #3 in SKI magazine.

Freeskiing magazine also named Whistler the number one freeskiing hot spot in North America.

The accolades are not just confined to North American publications. In the U.K. Whistler has been awarded the 2002 North American Ski Resort of the Year Award by the editors of the Good Skiing and Snowboarding Guide.
