Black’s Restaurant, Cow’s Ice Cream, the Chateau Whistler and the Pan Pacific Lodge this week became the first Whistler businesses certified Kid Friendly. Kid Friendly British Columbia brings together business and community groups that contribute to the security, cultural and educational qualities of life for children. Businesses that meet the Kid Friendly standards for safety and comfort, as well as employing staff who are knowledgeable, courteous and respectful of children, bear the Kid Friendly logo. The program, founded by Cheryl MacKinnon of West Vancouver, was launched in Vancouver in May. On Tuesday, Aug. 11 the program was launched in Whistler. The Kid Friendly logo acts as a marketing tool for businesses and is becoming a recognizable symbol among consumers. Because of this recognition and what the logo stands for the Whistler Resort Association is encouraging all member businesses to apply to become certified Kid Friendly. Once the application is made a team of local experts — Jenn McDonald, Chanel Smythe and Ali Richmond — conduct on-site reviews of products and services. A second aspect of the Kid Friendly program is to create awareness of the tourism industry among youth. Simon Hudson, Whistler’s youth co-ordinator, is helping with the local program.
