Intrawest hopes to build another employee housing building and an affordable townhouse development for its employees next summer. "We want to make the townhouses as affordable as possible and we’d like to be able to offer them to Blackcomb people first," Donal O’Callaghan, vice president of Intrawest’s Resort Development Group, said last week. The townhouse development will be located across Glacier Drive from Blackcomb’s staff housing, on a lot that has been used for parking. O’Callaghan said an application for the development was submitted to the municipality nearly a year ago. The project is currently being revised. Intrawest is also applying to build another seasonal employee building in the area of the existing staff housing. Whistler Mountain is also planning to build seasonal staff accommodation this summer, on a parcel on Alta Lake Road, opposite Tamarisk. In response to its call for affordable housing, the municipality is also anticipating affordable housing development proposals for lands south of Millar’s Pond, known as Cheakamus North, the 19 Mile Creek area behind Alpine Meadows Market, and the former Rainbow ski site. As well, the municipality may solicit development proposals for a parcel near Spruce Grove Park, if the municipality decides to buy the land in question from Greenside Properties. The Greenside proposal has yet to go to a public hearing.
