Friendly ski competition, rubbing shoulders with celebs and entertainment by sing/songwriter Valdy are all part of this year's Ski for Literacy day on Whistler Mountain, Friday, March 7. Tickets to the event cost $100 and include a ski pass for the day, lunch, aprés ski reception, challenge races, prizes and knowing that the money will go to a good cause: supporting Literacy B.C. and ABC Canada. Both organizations work to help adults become more literate. One in three B.C. adults have difficulty reading and writing, the groups say, that hinders their ability to get and keep jobs, or learn how to protect their health, safety or legal rights. Ski for Literacy began in 1992. The annual event has raised a total of $120,000 to support programs of the two literacy groups. Celebrities on hand for the event include Lauralee Bowie, Lisa Korthals, Leanne Patterson, The CFL All Star Ski Team, and Valdy, who has worked on behalf of literacy a long time. Founded in 1990, Literacy B.C. is the provincial organization concerned with promoting and supporting literacy activities in B.C. There are more than 600 members guided by a board of directors covering 15 regions. For more information or to register for Ski For Literacy day, call 1-800-663-1293.
