Spring Triathlon a wet affair

It might have been wetter on the trails than in was in the pool as spring rains drenched the 2002 North Shore Spring Triathlon on May 20. As always, a group of Sea to Sky athletes took part, and, as usual, they did us proud.

The North Shore Spring Triathlon is a shorter distance race with a 740 metre pool swim, a 20 km bike ride and a 5 km run. The top athletes crossed the finish line in under an hour, and a total of 381 competitors took part.

Squamish triathlete Gord Addison was first in the men’s 35 to 39 age division, and third overall with a time of 59 minutes 38 seconds. He was just three seconds out of second place and 23 seconds back of the leader.

Whistler’s Daniel havens was 12 th overall and second in the 45 to 49 category with a time of 1:02:01.

Tracey Pope of Pemberton was 33 rd overall, the third woman across the line, and first out of 36 racers in the 30 to 34 age group with a time of 1:04:47.

Whistler’s Paul Suter finished in 1:07:14, 44 th overall and fourth in the 40 to 44 age category.

Christine Suter finished less than half a minute back of Paul with a time of 1:07:46. She was 52 nd overall, 10 th among women, and second in the 30 to 34 age group.

Dawn Weberg-Titus was 73 rd overall, the 15 th woman and first out of 22 in the 40 to 44 race with a finish time of 1:09:23.

David Higgins was 78 th overall and 17 th in the 30 to 34 age group with a time of 1:09:46.

Tiffany Fenton of Squamish was 84 th and sixth in the 20 to 24 age group in 1:10:23.

Claire Daniels of Whistler was 131 st and fourth in the women’s under 20 category with a time of 1:14:19.

Gret Pitt of Squamish was 176 th , and 17 th in the men’s 35 to 39 group. His time was 1:18:19.

Joanne Turnbull of Squamish was sixth in the women’s 30 to 34 race with a time of 1:20:07.

Evan Sykes of Squamish was 26th in the men’s 35 to 39 race in 1:21:20.

In 1:21:36, Nancy Johnston of Whistler was eighth in the women’s 35 to 39 race.

Anne Bracey of Garibaldi Highlands finished second among 15 women in the 45 to 49 category.

Brandi Higgins of Whistler finished in 1:27:13, 23 rd in the women’s 30 to 34 race.

Marie-Claude Neron finished 24 th in the women’s 30 to 34 race in 1:27:31.

Brian Hughes of Garibaldi Highlands was 19 th in the men’s 45 to 49 race in 1:28:38.

Karen Playfair of Whistler was ninth in the women’s 40 to 44 race in 1:29:03.

Jesse Bir of Garibaldi Highlands finished a second back in 1:29:04 and was 12 th in the women’s 35 to 39 race.

Diane Mombourquette of Whistler was 18 th in the 35 to 39 age group in 1:33:25.

Jane Meadows of Whistler was 21 st in the women’s 40 to 44 group in 1:45:04.

The next triathlon on the schedule is the Vancouver Sprint Triathlon at UBC on June 9.
