High school parents invited to vote

The next Whistler Secondary Parents Advisory Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in the high school library.

At that meeting three people will be elected by a secret ballot to sit on the new School Planning Council.

Anyone who has children at Whistler Secondary school is a member of PAC and is urged to come out to meetings and get involved.

Parents are asked to consider their choices for representatives before the Oct. 23 meeting.

Braces, crutches still accepted

Susie Mortensen, owner of Whistler Physio, says there’s still time to dig deep into basements and crawl spaces for old physiotherapy equipment.

She is still collecting equipment for shipment to Latin America where an organization will distribute the much-needed goods to clinics.

Things to look out for are old knee braces and crutches which are clean and in good condition.

"Our junk is somebody else’s gold," she said in an earlier interview with Pique Newsmagazine.

The drop boxes are located at Mortensen’s three clinics, Whistler Physio in the Marketplace and in Creekside and Advanced Sports in the village.

Free mammogram service coming

A free mammogram service is coming to the corridor in November and women who are interested are urged to book appointments now.

The service is provided by the Ministry of Health and the B.C. Cancer Agency.

"Screening mammograms detect breast cancers early, when they are less likely to have grown or spread to other parts of the body," said Dr. Ivo Olivotto, professor and breast cancer expert, B.C. Cancer Agency in Victoria.

Those women who can apply for a breast cancer exam with the free service must be 40 years or older, not currently pregnant or breastfeeding, with no breast implants.

They are also looking for women who have never had breast cancer and have no current breast problems like lumps.

In addition the women must be B.C. residents, with a B.C. family doctor and cannot have had a mammogram in the past year.

October is breast cancer awareness month. It is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers among Canadian women.

The Screening Mammography Program will be in Whistler on Nov. 7-8 and 12-14 at the Whistler Health Care Centre, in Pemberton on Nov. 5-7 at the Health Centre and in Squamish from Nov. 14 to 18 at the hospital.
