Three people were injured in a head-on vehicle collision Wednesday, Oct. 16, that closed Highway 99 for over two hours.

According to the RCMP reports, a GMC Sonoma that was travelling southbound crossed the centre line and collided with a GMC Jimmy heading northbound. Both vehicles were travelling 80 to 90 km/h at the time.

The 33-year-old male driver of the Sonoma suffered broken ribs and a sore chest.

The female driver of the Jimmy suffered severe leg injuries, and is still in Vancouver in rehabilitation after undergoing surgery. Her 10-year-old son was also in the car at the time, and sustained a broken femur.

They were taken to the Whistler Health Care Centre after the crash, and then flown by helicopter to hospitals in the Lower Mainland.

The police were notified of the crash at approximately 6:43 p.m.

An investigation showed that alcohol was not a factor in the crash, although the male driver has been charged with driving with undue care.

Bears getting into trouble

Careless people who left garbage out in the open are responsible for a number of bear complaints of the weekend. Bear aversion techniques were used to drive the bears off, and no bears were killed.

With a poor late season berry crop, bears have moved into the valley to fatten up for the winter season. To avoid run-ins with bears, the RCMP are reminding people to store their garbage properly, or face bylaw penalties for neglecting to do so.

Whistler man still missing

The RCMP have discontinued their search for 28-year-old Jeff Billings of Whistler, who went missing in Lillooet Lake on Sept. 25.

According to the report, Billings had been drinking and smoking marijuana with two friends while camping and canoeing at Lillooet Lake. In the early morning, the males went canoeing and experienced some difficulty in beaching their canoe. Two of the males were on shore when the third tipped the canoe. One of the males attempted to swim out to assist him, but was unable to reach him.

The Whistler-Pemberton RCMP searched by air, and by using the dive team and police dog services, but were unable to locate Billings.
