The Pemberton-Whistler Shito Ryo Karate Club held its Winter Junior Tournament on Dec. 11 at the Pemberton Dojo, the Signal Hill School gymnasium.
Almost 30 Karateka Kids, aged 5 to 12, participated, with friends and family coming out to watch.
There were three rings set up. One was for the basics, one was for Kata, or forms, and one was for Kumite, or sparring. The sparring attracted the most attention as all of the participants were very spirited.
After the sparring, the Karata Kids, who refuelled on juice and cookies, got to teach their parents and friends some Karate moves on the mats. Sensei Wim wrapped up the nights with a short course in basic self-defence for everyone in attendance.
The Shito Ryo Karate Club thanks the parent volunteers for helping out, as well as the senior club members and Whistler Tae Kown Do, which lent the club some protective gear for the evening.
