European soccer clinic returns

The Whistler Youth Soccer Club will once again feature Saibo Talic and other coaches from the European Football School at their third annual summer soccer camp.

The Whistler Youth Soccer Club will once again feature Saibo Talic and other coaches from the European Football School at their third annual summer soccer camp.

The camp is for players from age six to 19 who want to improve their skills with one of Canada’s top coaches.

Talic hails from Croatia, and was pro player in former Yugoslavia from 1973 to 1981, after which he moved into coaching. He is a technical advisor for the B.C. Soccer Association, and helped to develop the provincial program.

The other coaches for the camp include:

• John Antulov, a former assistant coach for SFU, an SFU Athlete of the Year, a player and coach for SC Croatia, a player for the CSL champion Vancouver 86ers;

• Steve Hood, a certified coach with the English Soccer Association, and a coach for Washington State;

• Bob Moles, who, like Talic, holds a Canadian National B coaching licence;

• Predrag Pasic, a guest coach from Sarajevo who is a certified UEFA technical instructor, and a veteran of the Yugoslav National Team who played in the 1982 World Cup finals.

The soccer camp will feature skills training for all positions, coached scrimmages, and more.

"Children who attended last year said it was the best soccer camp they had ever attended and that they learned so much," said Andree Janyk of the Whistler Youth Soccer Club.

The camp runs from July 2 to 6 on the Myrtle Philip lower fields, with a session from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for players aged 6 to 11, and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for players aged 12 to 19. The camp is open to boys and girls, and you don’t need to have any previous soccer experience to take part. The only mandatory equipment is cleats and shin guards. Bring a water bottle.

The cost is $120 for the camp.

In addition, there will be a special free session for Whistler soccer coaches from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This is an opportunity for coaches to learn from some the top coaches in Canada, and pick up some new practice drills.

Registration forms are being sent out to all Whistler Youth Soccer Club members. If you’re not a member of the club, please contact Susan Shrimpton at simplysusan@whooshnet.com or Andree Janyk at 604-932-2461, or avajanyk@telus.net.
