Who: The Mahones
Where: Crab Shack
When: Friday, July 25
Its amazing how many good ideas can be created over a few beers, but very few actually get put into action. Luckily for Canada, the Mahones are an exception to the rule.
The rootsy Celtic and Irish punk rock drinkin band formed on St. Patricks Day 13 years ago and are still going strong, touring Canada, the U.S. and Europe on a regular basis.
Whats their secret to longevity? Perhaps its the powerful energy of their live performances. Time and time again, they pack dance floors and beer halls with a good time crowd ready to let their hair down.
Or perhaps its because they continue to put out solid albums that even Irish legends, the Pogues give the thumbs up to.
Whatever the reason, its enough for the Crab Shack to be kicking up their heels in the maritime musicians honour for their one and only stop in Whistler tonight, Friday, July 25. The Shack cant wait to shuck up and shell out free oysters, mussels and other tasty seafood creations for a Clambake Caileigh of epic proportions. Expect a few emerald isle drink specials to keep the night flowing in the right direction too.
Funnily enough, nobody in The Mahones is actually called Mahone. Theres Finny McConnell on vocals and guitar and Andrew Brown on accordion, tin whistle and organ, and they form the core of this good time group with three others.
Armed with their fourth album, The Mahones are packing houses once again with the energy of their live performances and their passion for ensuring the crowd always has a good time. This latest release is a best-of package including the hits Across The USA, Rise Again, Is this Bar Open 'til Tomorrow? and Drunken Lazy Bastard. Titled Paint The Town Red , the double CD also includes a bonus disc, The Mahones Live at The Horseshoe , which features a live performance of the band recorded at the legendary Toronto pub, The Horseshoe.
It seems their fans are more than the jigging and jovial party crowd too. Two members from the Tragically Hip, Gord Sinclair and drummer Johnny Fay, performed and produced a previous album. The Mahones also toured with former Pogues lead singer, Shane MacGowan, and his band The Popes.
The Mahones are going to be a great night out with no cover, free seafood and drink specials that would make a good Irishman blush. Doors open at 8 p.m., show starts 10 p.m.
