Pique Newsmagazine and Millar Creek hosted their Loonie Race on Sept. 11, featuring one of the longest uphill grunts of the year.

The race started at the new Spring Creek School, crossing over into Bayshores via the connecting gravel road. From there it climbed up to the top of Kadenwood Road, then continued up the dirt roads to Microwave Tower Road. After a good descent, the mountain bikers that made the cut-offwere sent down Tunnel Vision before returning to Spring Creek and taking the connector trail to Function Junction. The racers that didn’t make the cut were sent the rest of the way down Microwave Tower Road to Function.

Despite all the climbing and the technical downhill, the race came down to less than a bike length, with Matt Ryan and Will Routley trading spots at the front of the pack. Ryan was the last to pull ahead, and held onto the lead until the end. Both finished the race in 38 minutes, 22 seconds.

Third place went to James Crowe, who was also the top junior, in 41:07.

Ronni Lister was the top woman in 51:15.

The Loonie Race season wrapped up on Sept. 18 with a skills competition on Cut Yer Bars hosted by Barney’s Automotive.
