Harvest soup competition heats up Farmer’s Market

The top chefs and restaurants in Whistler will go ladle to ladle this Sunday, Oct. 12 as the Alta Lake School hosts its annual Harvest Soup Contest.

The soup will be showcased in the Upper Village at the base of Blackcomb, coinciding with Thanksgiving, the annual Turkey Sale, and the last Farmers’ Market of the season.

For $5 you can sample the soups and cast a vote for your favourite. Oh, and it comes with a fresh roll.

"Last year we had so much fun with the contest," said organizer Peggy Vogler.

The reigning title belongs to Chef Shane Robillard of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler’s Wildflower Café. His soup was a Roasted Sugar Pumpkin with Balsamic Foam and Asiago Crisp.

The runners-up were Whistler-Blackcomb’s Split Pea and Ham, and Chef Brad Cummings of Monk’s Grill with his Yam, Squash and Corn Chowder.

This year’s lineup hasn’t been finalized, but will include chefs from Whistler-Blackcomb and the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

The proceeds from the event will go towards the Alta Lake School, to pay for music and art programs.

The soups will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or until the soup tureens run dry.
