Additional trails will be opened as conditions permit

Although cross country skiers have been enjoying the early season conditions of the Lost Lake trails for several weeks, the season will officially open this Friday, Dec. 12.

The municipality hoped to open the Lost Lake cross country trail system on Dec. 6, but the warm and wet weather of last week made it impossible to properly groom the trails.

"Up to now it’s been free (to ski). We were waiting for some more snow to open, but it doesn’t look like it’s coming too soon," said Jamie Fournier, lead hand for the Lost Lake trails.

The groomer has made a pass of the trails, and Fournier hopes to make another, conditions permitting, before the official opening. If not, the trails will continue to be snowmobile groomed.

All told, about 7.5 km of beginner trails around Lost Lake will be open this weekend, and more will be opened as conditions permit.

"Trail like Centennial and Panorama are not as open as the core Lost Lake trails, and won’t be opened until there is more snow. We can’t take the Cat (groomer) on the golf course yet, either," said Fournier.

The trail system will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and passes can be purchased at the main Lost Lake ticket booth. Rentals are available at Nicklaus North, the Cross Country Connection, and at various businesses in Whistler Village and Nesters.

For the eighth year, day ticket prices will remain at $10 for an adult for a full day. An ultra pass can be purchased – $15 for an adult, $30 for a family – that includes admission to the Meadow Park Sports Centre so skiers can wrap up their day with a workout, swim, hot tub or steam. An adult book of 10 is $80 and a family book of 10 is $160.

Season passes are available at $170 for an adult, $82 for a youth, or $340 for a family.

The ticket booth is also renting baby gliders, $5 for every two hours. These are capable of pushing infants up to 20 kg (44 lbs).

While the cross country operations are in effect, there is no pedestrian access to the Lost Lake trail system. This includes the Chateau Whistler Golf Course and the Nicklaus North Golf Club, which are part of the system. Dogs are also not permitted on the trail system.

Walkers or skiers with dogs are asked to use the Valley Trail between Meadow Park and Rainbow Park, which will be groomed when the conditions permit, or the Whistler Golf Club.
