Mountain bike festival returns as Crankworx

Last year’s Whistler Summer Gravity Festival will be tough to top, with thousands of spectators turning out to watch the Joyride Biker Cross and Slopestyle events, as well as the Canadian Mountain Bike National Championships.

Still, organizers are determined to build on the Gravity Festival, changing the name to Crankworx, and adding a few events this year to make up for the fact that the national championships have moved on.

Crankworx takes place July 22-25, and includes the third annual Air Downhill down A-Line, the Boneyard Biker X, the 3,400 vertical foot Garbanzo Downhill, and the B.C. Downhill Championships.

The main event will no doubt be the Pro Invitational Slopestyle Expression Session in the park at the base of Whistler Mountain. The list of competitors includes Richie Schley, Dave Watson, Wade Simmons and Thomas Vanderham.

There will be an industry expo in the village, parties at night, and mountain bike and trials bike demonstrations.

Crankworx is produced by the Whistler Events Bureau (WEB), which includes Whistler-Blackcomb, Tourism Whistler and the Resort Municipality of Whistler.
