Disabled ski team wins four medals in two days
The Canadian Disabled Ski Team got off to a great start in World Cup competition at Kimberley Alpine Resort this week, with two medals on Monday and another two on Tuesday.
In the giant slalom on opening day, blind skier Chris Williamson of Toronto and his partner Richard Pridday skied the two fastest runs in their category to win the gold medal.
Sit-skier Kimberley Joines of Edmonton earned her second bronze medal of the year after a strong finish in the super G at Wildshonau, Austria earlier this month.
"The conditions are awesome," said CDAST head coach Ozzie Sawicki. "We had a beautiful, sunny day for the first day of competition and the race organizing committee is proving once again that it knows exactly what to do to put on a successful disabled alpine ski competition."
Gord Tuck of Cowichan Lake and Whistler’s Brad Lennea were strong in the men’s sit-ski race, finishing 11 th and 12 th respectively. This is Lennea’s first season on the World Cup circuit.
In the second giant slalom the following day, Williamson and Pridday repeated their performance and took another gold medal in the blind skier category.
This time it was Montrealer Arly Fogarty’s turn to win a bronze medal in the women’s standing category. She was followed by Nanaimo’s Andrea Dziewior and Carla Yustak in fourth and fifth.
In the men’s category, Calgary’s Josh Byrne was 10 th and Matt Hallat of Coquitlam was 14 th . Martin Larose of Carignan, Quebec was 10 th in the men’s sitting category.
Six other Canadians skied off the challenging course, including Tuck, Lennea, Scott Patterson and Andre Nasvytis of the World Cup team.
