The 10 th annual Whistler Classic squash tournament took place over three days at Meadow Park last weekend, with local athletes fending off strong challengers from around the province and as far away as Toronto.

The players were divided into pools from A to D, with higher-ranked athletes in the ‘A’ division.

"All of the locals did awesome this year," said Rob Eberhard. In the Men’s A pool, Whistler’s Ben Thomas made it to the finals after dropping a former number two seed from Toronto in three games. Once there he faced Vancouver’s Jeff Boag, who is currently ranked fifth in the province and has been ranked as high as second in recent years. Boag went on to win the category.

Rob Eberhard also did well in the category, making it to the semi-finals where he faced the eventual champion. Boag won that match 3-1.

"I was happy to get a win in against the number five player in the province," said Eberhard.

"The finals were really incredible to watch with Jeff and Ben showing off a bit with some circus shots, and in the end Jeff was just a little better. We were all pretty excited for Ben, who played really well."

In the Men’s A Consolation, Camren Fishenden from the Okanagan took the title, edging out Mark Ingram of Vancouver 3-2.

The Women’s A competition went to Nicola Martin of Vancouver after edging out Frances Frost. The Consolation title went to Tracita Dingwell from Vancouver Island, followed by Liz Anderchuk.

In the Men’s B competition Whistler Tim Ng made a run at the finals, only to be knocked out by Graham Swann of Kamloops in the semi-finals.

"If the draw had been a little different, Ng probably would have met Graham in the finals," said Eberhard.

Graham went on to win the title after beating Vancouver’s Shawn Patton.

The Men’s B Consolation title went to Whistler’s Sandy Treagus, who knocked off Vancouver’s Chris Sheriff in the final round.

Whistler’s Tom Demarco also came close to winning in the Men’s C bracket, but like Eberhard and Ng he lost to the eventual winner, Vancouver’s Brian MacLean, in the semi finals. Steve Cartner, another Whistler player, finished second.

The Men’s C Consolation round wen to Al Paetz, followed by John McBean.

In the women’s C category, Cathy McLean from Whistler edged out Max Hakh for the win. Lorna Carmichael, another Whistler player, went on to win the consolation final.

The Men’s D title went to 12-year-old MacKenzie Foster of Whistler, who edged out 13-year-old Sean Powell in the finals. Randy Holmes was the other junior the in the category, and he finished second in the consolation round to Michael Rostad.

The Whistler Classic will wrap up the competitive season for many of Whistler’s competitive squash players, which began in October with house league.

All three of Whistler’s golf clubs, Nicklaus North Golf Club, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club and the Whistler Golf Club, sponsored the prizes for the event.
