New program teaches outdoor survival, conservation skills

If you got lost in the woods, could you find your way out?

On Sunday, Oct. 17, Lisa Helmer is holding a new wetlands course called Youth Outdoor Survival Skills for Conservation, geared to wilderness enthusiasts between the ages of 15 and 25.

The course is for people who would like to learn important outdoor skills and environmental conservation, giving them the opportunity to use tools like GPS units, digital cameras and maps while learning critical survival skills and species identification.

In addition, there will be guest speakers talking about local and regional land use planning processes, and the importance of conserving natural areas like wetlands.

The course will run from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Pemberton Community Centre and Ryan Creek North Wetland.
