Annual mushroom festival this weekend

As the saying goes, there are old mushroomers and bold mushroomers, with a little knowledge making the difference.

The Whistler Naturalists aim to make that difference by hosting the Fungus Among Us festival Oct. 15 and 16 at Myrtle Philip Community Centre on Lorimer Road. The weekend event features a variety of events that will appeal to experienced mushroomers as well as those who can’t recognise a spore from a gill.

The festival kicks off Friday evening with "Welcome to the Wonderful World of Fungi," a presentation by mushroom experts Andy MacKinnon and Paul Kroeger. MacKinnon is a contiributor to Plants of Coastal B.C . Kroeger is a Vancouver-based mycologist with extensive knowledge of mushrooms in B.C.

Saturday events include guided walks beginning at 9 a.m., a mushroom cooking demonstration wit Ophra Buckman and displays explaining how to identify various species of fungus. The afternoon wraps up at 4 p.m.

If you’re intent on becoming an old mushroomer, Fungus Among Us is not to be missed.

Friday evening’s talk is by donation. The guided walk and cooking demo is $15/$10 with a Whistler Naturalists membership. The cooking demo only is $10/$5 with membership.
