All 4 1 something new for Between Shifts Theatre Co.

Squamish’s Between Shifts Theatre Co. is on new ground with this year’s All 4 1 - a quartet of short plays, all four of which will be presented each night of the six-show run at the Brackendale Art Gallery.

The format is a radical departure from last spring’s emotionally wrenching, full-length drama The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man In The Moon Marigolds, as is the venue, Between Shifts’ Kathryn Daniels noted.

"We just wanted to do something different and try a different space with a different feeling. Have the opportunity to have a more intimate setting," Daniels said.

The troupe began soliciting plays following the completion of the Dracula Pantomime performances in January and received submissions from all over North America. Plays selected include Save Me A Place At Forest Lawn by Lorees Yerby, Bentley Burnout by Allison McWood, Variations On The Death Of Trotsky by David Ives and The Seduction Of Chaos by Kent R. Brown, an award-winning play making its Canadian premiere.

The plays were workshopped with seasoned Vancouver-based stage directors Jay Hamburger and Susanna Uchatius over a series of Sundays. Uchatius had formerly worked in a similar format with Daniels and cast member Sara Douglas in Short Skirt Theatre’s February production of Famous Movie Monologues of Love and Lust.

Thirteen actors hailing from Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton are involved in All 4 1, ranging in age from 16-64, with four different Between Shifts members (Daniels, Dan Jarvis, Paul Fletcher and Stephen Clarke) stepping up to direct.

All 4 1 is staging Thursday, May 19-Saturday May 21, and Thursday, May 26-Saturday, May 28. All shows take place at the Brackendale Art Gallery and begin at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $12, available in advance from the venue and at Mostly Books in Squamish.
