A Squamish-based theatre group has announced auditions for an upcoming stage musical version of cult film phenomenon The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The 1975 film, a madcap tale of straight edge young newlyweds who find shelter from a storm and sexual liberation in the lair of "transvestite, transsexual Transylvanian" Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his freaky co-habitants continues to outlive its expiration date.
A bona-fide countercultural legend, late night screenings of Rocky Horror in metropolitan arthouse theatres continue to attract both superfans and newbie "virgins" who show up dressed in character, sing along to the film’s soundtrack classics like "Let’s Do The Time Warp Again," and respond to script-based prompts such as throwing toast at the screen when a beverage-based "toast" is proposed.
Rocky Horror’s heart and soul is the quintessentially campy Frank-N-Furter character. The role was immortalized in film by actor Tim Curry and has been pre-cast in the Squamish presentation with Richard Trann.
All other roles, however, are still up for grabs.
Rocky Horror, the musical, is being produced by Sea To Sky Entertainment in conjunction with Squamish Youth Theatre. In the director’s chair is film/theatre impresario Adriane Polo with musical direction by Fran Booth, the team behind last December’s production of The Sound Of Music.
A multi-show run has been planned for October 13-30 with performances at North Vancouver’s Centennial Theatre, Whistler’s MY Millennium Place and the Eagle Eye Theatre in Squamish.
The production is seeking adults and older teens with singing and basic dancing skills. Auditions take place this Monday, June 13 and Tuesday, June 14, 7-8 p.m. at the Sea To Sky Hotel in Squamish. The musical will be cast this month, however rehearsals will not start until September.
