Intrawest-Whistler Blackcomb relay ream bring home award

Intrawest and Whistler-Blackcomb staff family and friends won the Show Me the Money award for the fifth year running as top fundraiser in the hospitality division at last weekend’s 24 Hour Relay For The Kids.

Intrawest and Whistler-Blackcomb staff family and friends won the Show Me the Money award for the fifth year running as top fundraiser in the hospitality division at last weekend’s 24 Hour Relay For The Kids.

All the money raised, $38,000, goes to support Camp Squamish, which is run by the B.C. Lions Easter Seal organization.

"It’s more than just sending kids to camps, it is about giving kids with disabilities a place to go where they are free from life’s daily challenges," said team captain Andrew Zwicker.

"It provides them opportunities to go fishing, canoeing, horseback riding and sleeping under the stars."

This year the Intrawest-Whistler Blackcomb team was also awarded the Quarter Million Dollar Club Plaque for raising $290,000 in the eight years it has participated in the event.

Zwicker has been organizing fundraising events such as Celtic For the Kids, Silent Auction/Jail and Bail at the GLC, which brought in over $12,000, and the BBQ Luau’s at the Intrawest Corporate office since January.

Others also helped out with The Whistler Blackcomb Foundation donating $3,000, Club SHRED donating $2,000, and Mountain FM offering over $2,000 worth of airtime. Sun Cruise Printing printed the team shirts, Traction creative and the Whistler-Blackcomb sign shop designed the team shirts, and Windsor Plywood donated $500. Ken Derpak also brought in an astonishing $5,000 through the Jail and Bail event.

New appointments in guest services and IT at Whistler-Blackcomb

Whistler-Blackcomb has appointed two new directors in the divisions of Guest Services and Information Technology.

Wendy Aitken and Mark Sedgwick have been promoted to Director, Guest Services and Director, Information Technology respectively, effective July 1.

"I am very pleased to announce the promotions of (Aitken) and (Sedgwick) to their new roles, recognizing their hard work, talent and impeccable performance," said Dave Brownlie, executive vice president and COO at Whistler-Blackcomb.

"Both individuals have worked with Whistler-Blackcomb over many years, taking on increasing levels of responsibility. We are very fortunate to have exceptional employees within our organization that are ready to step up when the opportunity is available. Both… will be key members of our Senior Leadership Team at Whistler-Blackcomb."

Sedgwick, a level 4 ski instructor, began his career at Whistler-Blackcomb in 1993. Through a steady evolution of training and increasingly senior positions, he became Manager of IT Application Services in 2001.

After working for 17 years in Vancouver with the Bank of Nova Scotia, Aitken decided to head to the mountains in 1990 and started in Whistler Mountain’s Guest Relations department as a host. Her passion for guest service shone and resulted in promotion after promotion.

Sedgwick and Aitken replace Mike Whitmell and Fiona Cull respectively, both of whom have taken on larger responsibilities across all Intrawest Mountain Resorts.
