The Thanksgiving weekend in Whistler is usually associated with turkey and big sales on ski and snowboard equipment, but there’s another sale Oct. 8 that may have a more lasting impact.
The annual fall used book sale will be held in front of the IGA Marketplace on Saturday, Oct. 8, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Proceeds from the book sale will, as usual, go toward acquiring new resources for the libraries at Whistler Secondary and Spring Creek elementary schools. But this year the new Head of the Lake School in Skatin will also benefit.
For the past few years donated children’s books in good shape have never made it to the used book sale. Instead, appropriate reading material was taken out of the pool of books and went directly to the library shelves at Spring Creek. Book sale organizer Jane Reid said so many good books have been donated that the Spring Creek library is now well stocked.
She’s hoping the Thanksgiving used book sale can start to do the same thing for the Head of the Lake School.
The used book sale is looking for donations of all kinds of materials, including fiction, non-fiction, travel and how-to books, as well as magazines, comics, videos and CDs.
Collection bins are now set up at the usual places: Nesters Market, TD Canada Trust, the Whistler Public Library and Spring Creek Community School.
Pemberton Legion helping out
A fundraiser for Pemberton’s Janet Meen and her children will be held Friday, Sept. 23 at the Pemberton Legion.
Meen lost her husband in a car accident near Vernon on the Labour Day weekend.
A dinner, silent auction and live music by Still Smokin’ Lite will be part of the evening Friday, starting at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Gallery helping Katrina victims
The Movie Gallery in Squamish will be having a free "gallery" day and silent auction in aid of Hurricane Katrina victims this Saturday, Sept. 24.
The auction will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and all proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross. A wide range of auction items have been donated by companies, including Cougar Mountain, Ziptrek, Whistler Bungee, Canadian ATV, Wildwood Bistro, Mecca Message, Fairmont Chateau Whistler, Affinity Sports, Spicy Sports, snowboard.com, Creekside Market and Summit Ski and Snowboards.
