A 19-year-old Pemberton woman died in an accident on the Sea to Sky Highway on Wednesday, Oct. 5. At approximately 8:45 p.m. Shannon Archer was traveling north near Porteau Cove when the Dodge Neon she was driving collided with a southbound 1992 GMC pickup. The car caught fire on impact and the Capilano College student was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck and a passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The two North Vancouver residents were taken to Lions Gate Hospital for treatment.

The Squamish RCMP detachment is continuing to investigate the cause of the accident. However, it has been reported that the Neon crossed over the centre line into the south lane while negotiating a turn at Doodson’s Corner, approximately five km north of Lions Bay.

Pemberton Secondary School Principal Lawrence Tarasoff remembers Archer as a student who was well liked by both fellow classmates and teaching staff.

"Shannon was a great kid. She was very active in the dragon boat activities and dance squad," Tarasoff said of the former student. "It’s a tragedy and we’re sorry that this happened."

Archer is survived by her parents and a brother, all of whom are residents of Pemberton. A memorial service for the young woman will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. at Pemberton Secondary School.
