It's the little train company that did. West coast-based Rocky Mountaineer Vacations have won the World Travel Award's top train tour award. The company's Rocky Mountaineer two-day, $1,500-Vancouver to Banff tour garnered the "World's Leading Travel Experience by Train," voted on by 2,000 travel professionals from 200 countries.

In an inaugural win for a Canadian train operation, Rocky Mountaineer beat out six other train tours, including the U.K. and Peru Orient Express and South Africa's Blue Train.

"This is a tremendous honour for our organization," Peter Armstrong, president of the train company he started in 1990, said in a press release. "For the Rocky Mountaineer to be recognized with such a prestigious global award and nominated together with such an outstanding collection of world-renowned tourist trains speaks volumes."

In addition to its Rocky Mountain tours, trains will begin heading to Whistler next May when the company starts up its daily Whistler Mountaineer service from North Vancouver. The company will also be offering multi-day train tours from Whistler to the Rocky Mountains.
