Mitzvah on the mountain a success

Good turnout promises rabbis return next year

Rabbis Schneur Wineberg and Yaacov Behrman have had a good response so far to their first, and they hope annual, Mitzvah on the Mountain.

The two rabbis, brought to Whistler by Vancouver-based Lubavitch B.C., have been hosting traditional prayers, dinners, and nightly menorah lighting since the start of the eight-day Chanukah festival on Dec. 25. They have been connecting with local Jewish residents, as well as a large number of Jewish second homeowners and tourists.

This week they will be hosting a Friday night service at 5 p.m. and a Shabbat morning service on Saturday at 9:30 p.m., both in the Telus Conference Centre. They also hope to host a few more social events with the community, based on interest. They’ve had anywhere from 25 to 75 people out to various events and services, including 75 people to the first night of Chanukah, and 50 people for the Friday prayer.

They will also continue to light menorahs in the village every evening at 4:15 p.m. near Millennium Place.
