Wassabi Collective celebrates Canada Day with special guests

What: Beaver Fever 2006

When: Friday, June 30

Where: Garibaldi Lift Company

Tickets: $20/$22

Nelson’s Wassabi Collective returns for the fifth annual Beaver Fever: A Canada Deh Celebration on Friday, June 30 at the Garibaldi Lift Company (GLC) with guest performers spanning everything from funk, world beat, breaks and house music. It’s all about creating a great vibe.

"Our music makes people feel good," said Wassabi frontman Brent "Gisto" Hongisto from his newly built home studio. "We want to move people and make people feel comfortable and inspired and uplifted. I think that is why people come to see us. They feel a certain vibe that reminds them of the good things in their life. It’s a release in a lot of ways."

The high-energy jam band – made up of Hongisto, bassist Scott Milne, percussionist and vocalist Melissa Meretsky, drummer Jimmy Lewis and DJ Rahj "Mahal" Levinson – cranks out everything from reggae, Latin and African beats to techno, house, break beats and rock and roll with a strong positive message.

"People should believe in themselves," Hongisto said. "People can make a difference in the world. No matter how small it may seem."

Whistler favourite Kori K joins the party with an opening house set at 9 p.m. DJ Andy Clockwork and singer Ingrid Hakanson take over at 10 p.m. Prepare to be funked, bumped and mesmerized by their break beat madness. Wassabi Collective opens their first one-hour set at 10:30 p.m. Clockwork and Hakanson reappear for a one-hour set at 11:30 p.m. and then Wassabi Collective closes out the Canuck party.

Tickets are $20 for the first 100 and $22 thereafter. Advance tickets are available at the GLC and Electric Daisy. Doors open at 9 p.m.
