The Canadian Alpine Ski Team will have to wait another few weeks to start the 2006-07 season after warm temperatures and heavy rainfall decimated the giant slalom course in Soelden, Austria on Monday. Although it was possible to move the course further up the mountain, a course change was against International Ski Federation rules.

The announcement came after the Canadian team held a series of qualifying runs on the weekend. Canada has seven start bibs in men’s giant slalom and nine racers competing for those starts.

The seven men to qualify were Thomas Grandi, Erik Guay, Francois Bourque, John Kucera, Stefan Guay, Julien Cousineau, and Jean-Philippe Roy.

Canada has six start bibs in women’s GS, and Whistler’s Britt Janyk, Genevieve Simard, Brigitte Acton, Kelly Vanderbeek, Shona Rubens and Christina Lustenberger were to have started.

The team will remain in Europe to train, with the technical skiers heading to Levi, Finland for a pair of slaloms on Nov. 11-12. The first speed event on the schedule is the Bombardier Lake Louise Winterstart festival which includes downhill and super G races. The men race on Nov. 25-26 and the women on Dec. 1-3.
