After surging to the top of the standings, a string of bad luck has set back Trevor Hopkins in the B.C. Cup cyclocross series.

Two weekends ago Hopkins headed to the Vanier Park Cyclocross, ranked first in the provincial B category. He did not finish that race, after getting two flat tires in a row close to the start.

“I think about half the field flatted out in that race,” said Hopkins, “it was a really rough course.”

Although he lost ground in the standings, he was still in the race for first with double points up for grabs at the provincial cyclocross championships at Jericho last weekend. Unfortunately things didn’t go quite as planned.

“I didn’t have a good race,” he said. “I hooked bars with a guy at the start and crashed, which dropped me back to about 40 th place. Halfway through I got myself back into the top-10, and then crashed again.”

Hopkins finished the day in 15 th , and fifth overall in the provincial standings.

Mike Charuk, Hopkins’s teammate on Team Whistler/Natures Path, placed 35 th , while Alex Cogger was seventh in the Men’s C category.

The Men’s A category was a who’s who of Canadian cycling, with mountain bike champion Goeff Kabush edging out road champion Andrew Pinfold for the win. Andrew Kyle, another mountain biker, was third. Kabush also took the overall provincial title.

Top road rider Wendy Simms won the women’s event and provincial title, followed by Kelly Jones and Sarah Stewart.
