Yee haw! to new night in Whistler

Country comes to the Longhorn Saloon on Fridays, starting with Steel Toe Boots

By Nicole Fitzgerald

Country music is roaming outside the stereotypical twang with new sounds infusing the genre. Steel Toe Boots brings a harder edge to kick off the new Country Night at the Longhorn Saloon Friday, Nov. 10.

“There’s been a resurgence with pop country music, with bands infusing rock ’n’ roll with country lyrics and themes,” said Dave Borys of Steel Toe Boots. “People are realizing country can be much edgier; it doesn’t have to be bubble gum country.”

From influences such as Johnny Cash and Keith Urban to Tom Petty and AC/DC, Steel Toe Boots drive a hard-rocking country sound that is steadily catching on.

This summer, the boys stepped up to a stage every three days with regular shows throughout the Lower Mainland at the Roxy, The Media Club and The Pic, just to name a few. The summer highlight was performing on the main stage at the Abbotsford Agrifair, where Steel Toe Boots shared the billing with the likes of Cruzeros, Damian Marshall and Swollen Members.

While the four-piece band of Borys, Garett Vergides, Dave Hartney and Steve Costello have played together since high school, it wasn’t until last year the Lynn Valley boys pulled together to seriously pursue their country craft.

The band’s sets include both originals from their four-song demo album as well as covers running the gamut. They aren’t afraid of experimenting — mixing up Collective Soul with a little banjo.

Steel Toe Boots begins at 8 p.m. with DJ Byron James spinning breaks afterwards.

Look out for a mechanical bull in weeks to come.
