Snowboard federation announces 2007-08 teams

Maëlle Ricker one of three athletes on snowboard team

The Canadian Snowboard Federation announced its alpine and snowboardcross teams for the 2007-08 season this past week, and will be following up with a list of halfpipe athletes shortly.

The alpine team is coming off a strong season under coach Mark Fawcett, with Matthew Morison on three podiums, Jasey-Jay Anderson on two podiums, and a hugely improved women’s program with Alexa Loo, Caroline Calvé, and Kimiko Zakreski all finishing in the top-10 or better in World Cup races. Michael Lambert was also named to the national “A” team after a breakthrough season.

The “B” team, which will focus more on Nor Am competitions, includes Adam McLeish, Philippe Berube, Patrick Farrell and Christelle Doyon, all of Quebec.

Several promising athletes were left off the “B” team, but may be added to a new program that will replace the Project 2010 pre-Olympic selection team this season. Details of that program will be announced by June 15.

The snowboardcross “A” team is small this year, featuring just three athletes. Vancouver’s Drew Neilson was the obvious choice, going undefeated in the shortened season and finishing on the podium in the World Cup finals to win the overall World Cup globe. Whistler’s Maëlle Ricker is also on the list, placing third overall this past season, and Olympic silver medalist Dominique Maltais is returning to the sport after being sidelined last year with a ligament tear in her knee.

The “B” team includes Christelle Doyon, Tom Velisek, Robert Fagan, Simon Bonenfant, Francois Boivin, Jasey-Jay Anderson and Mike Robertson.

As in alpine, the snowboard team will be announcing a development program to replace Project 2010 in mid-June.
