Pemberton’s John Chilton and Lisa Korthals are two of the athletes featured in Higher Ground, a mountain culture film that documents a yearlong journey though the eyes of world-class climbers.
The film, by Chris Alstrin and Alex Lavigne, focuses on the importance of exploration, passion for the mountains and the people who pursue the lifestyle. From big wall first ascents in Zion, Utah to winter alpine ascents in the Canadian Rockies, to big wall ski descents in B.C.’s Coast Mountains, Higher Ground spotlights some of the continent’s most inaccessible and spectacular terrain.
The focus, however, is on the athletes and the passion that drives them.
Nine of the 14 athletes featured in the film are Canadian. In addition to Chilton and Korthals, the cast includes Ines Papert, Audrey Gariepy, Guy Lacelle, Sean Isaac, Josh Wharton, Mike Anderson, Shawn Huisman, Rob Pizem, Phil Gruber, Andrew Querner, Scott Semple and Rob Owens.
The GLC show is a fundraiser for the Land Conservancy’s Skaha Bluffs campaign and will include a slideshow.
Husband-wife team lead workshops
The second summer of Whistler Art Workshops on the Lake kicks off next week with the husband and wife artist ensemble of Alan Wylie and Janice Robertson.
The award-winning artists provide two distinctively diverse workshops. Wylie, who was born in Glasgow, immigrated to Nova Scotia in 1967 and is known for his technical mastery, instructs in all levels of drawing and composition, July 3-5. The workshop is $300, and registration is through the Whistler Arts Council.
Robertson, who was born on Vancouver Island into a family with a long history of female artists, will teach basic techniques in painting with acrylics on canvas. Her workshop, which takes place July 6-8, is suitable for students at the beginner to intermediate level. Registration is $250.
The workshops take place at the Alta Lake Station House, a rustic heritage home on Alta Lake.

Art at the Market in Squamish
The Squamish Valley Artists Society is presenting a series of summer art shows, at the Squamish Arts Council building, next to the farmers market on Cleveland Avenue.
For the Canada Day weekend Art at the Market artists Wanda Doyle, Tony Jaxon, Felicity Lowinger, Judy McQuinn, Al Price Fran Solar, Martin Thorne, Linda Wagner and Gunter Wissmeyer will be showing. The collection includes copper work, turned wood, paintings, pottery, stained glass and leatherwork.
Art at the Market takes place between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, June 30, and between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, July 1.
