The 300-acre First Nations legacy land deal was made official on Oct. 15 as Bruce Edmonds, acting chief of Lil’wat Nation, Whistler Mayor Ken Melamed and Squamish Nation chief Gibby Jacob signed the historic document.

The agreement pinpoints eight Crown land sites in Whistler which have been transferred to the two First Nations, in addition to 452 bed units, or the equivalent of development rights to 75 single family homes.

This week Chief Gibby Jacob expressed his concern about meeting council’s May 31, 2008 rezoning deadline for the Alpine North site, which is the only one of the eight sites designated for market housing.

“We’re tied to providing a development plan to (Whistler) by next May,” said the chief. “Given some internal issues we’re hoping to meet that (deadline) but I think it’s going to be a real push.

“If everybody’s keen to see us get some benefits out of this thing, I think that particular issue should be flexible, to say the least.”

Council imposed the deadline due to concerns about Olympic workload in the lead up to the 2010 Games.
