A Union of B.C. Municipalities’ sponsored B.C. Climate Action Charter now has the support of 106 local governments, 44 more than signed on this past fall when the agreement with the province was introduced at the UBCM annual conference.

All of the municipalities that sign onto the charter pledge to make their operations carbon neutral by 2012 through reduced emissions, approved carbon offset programs, and efforts to upgrade government-owned buildings and vehicles.

Whistler, which has its own plan to reduce emissions in its Whistler 2020 strategy, was among the first municipal governments to sign onto the more ambitious Climate Action Charter.

“The B.C. Climate Action Charter is an extraordinary agreement that strives to find the best made-in-B.C. solutions to the increasingly important issue of climate change,” said Ida Chong, B.C.’s community services minister. “It gives me great pleasure to see that, to date, 106 local governments are committed to this timely and sensitive matter. I know other local governments will be joining this important initiative over the coming months.”

The charter includes provisions for municipality’s to share information on their progress, regular annual updates, and access provincial programs for support. The UBCM has 160 municipal government members, and 28 regional districts.
