Local athletes on top at B.C. Cup finals

The B.C. Cup series wrapped up last weekend with downhill and cross country races at Mt. Washington. Local athletes participated in both events, and a handful of riders made the podium.

Whistler’s Rebecca McQueen, new to racing this season, also claimed the overall women’s downhill title this year.

In the elite women’s downhill, McQueen beat Squamish’s Miranda Miller by almost nine seconds, while Fiona Taylor of Courtenay was third.

Steve Chan of Nanaimo won the men’s elite race, as well as the men’s provincial title. The top Whistler racer was Adam Wright in eighth place.

Squamish’s Lauren Rosser was second in Junior Women 15 to 18.

Cory Leclerc was third in Master Men 30 to 39.

Whistler’s Kerry-Anne Hamilton was second in Under 15 Women.

Chris Polley and Tristan Merrick of Whistler were first and second in Citizen Men 19 to 29.

In the cross country race, Chris Lawrence of Squamish raced unopposed in the Citizen Men 30-Plus group to take the win, while Lauren Rosser picked up her second silver medal of the weekend in Junior Women 15 to 18.

Whistler’s Mike Charuk raced in Master Men 40 to 49, placing fifth.

For the elite women, Whistler’s Kristin Johnston was third by a gap of over seven minutes.

Mo Lawrene of Squamish was first in Under 17 men.
