Power Mountain Catskiing decided to forgo the usual job posting
and interview this year by holding a competition for Miss Powder Mountain
Catskiing.
Some 42 women applied for the job, and the top-10 went on to a
judged talent competition last weekend which involved singing, dancing and
retrieving four fake moustaches from the crowd. At the end of the evening, the
tiara went to Kate Turner, 26.
The prize is multiple days of catskiing, new Burton AK Powder
Mountain outerwear, a season’s pass for Whistler-Blackcomb, Anon Eyewear and a
regular paycheque for promoting Powder Mountain, handing out raffle tickets for
free catskiing at après parties sponsored by Kokanee, and socializing with
Powder’s clients.
The event was also held to promote Powder Mountain’s women-only
days, as well as to raise the profile of the company and its sponsors in the
community.
Gord Calder, general manager for Powder, said Turner stood out
for a few reasons. “She has a communications degree from the University of
Waterloo, and a few years working in the heli-skiing industry which was a
bonus,” he said. “It really pushed her into the top-10, and she was pretty good
at rustling up the moustaches as well.”
Calder says there were 6,500 unique views to the Miss Power Mountain competition website in just over a month, and a total of 45,000 page views. He said the competition would be back again next year.
