SSC role to change

The role of the Squamish Sustainability Corporation (SSC) will change after council approves a recommendation from the district's economic development committee, said Mayor Greg Gardner this week.

The role of the Squamish Sustainability Corporation (SSC) will change after council approves a recommendation from the district's economic development committee, said Mayor Greg Gardner this week.

The mayor said the SSC board was independently and simultaneously reviewing its role and structure, just as the economic development committee has been doing as part of its mandate to look at the district's business diversification apparatus.

"The proposal of (SSC) chair (Dave) Crewson was to expand their mandate on a sector by sector basis," said Gardner.

So rather than explore economic development generally, the SSC will focus on specific files, strategies like knowledge based or marine industries.

To that end, business development lead Dave Thomson will continue working in much the same capacity he has been. Meanwhile, the district will assume operations of the Adventure Centre, leaving the SSC to focus primarily on Tourism Squamish.
