Squamish Nation is gearing up to celebrate the premiere of an historical film exploring the band's history at Totem Hall in Stawamus this weekend, with prizes, drumming, singing and the presentation of warrior canoe all scheduled for the opening.

Called Squamish Nation: Stories From the Heart, the film is by local columnist, historical society member and filmmaker Helmut Manzl. Approved by the Squamish Historical Society and reportedly praised by Squamish elders, the movie runs for about two hours, time spent exploring the evolution of the nation.

Residential schools, territory boundaries, work histories and family bonds are all explored, with particular sensitivity given to the agonies of lost language and identity experienced in the residential school system.

While the film premieres at Totem Hall, it may also play at the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre in Whistler.

This is Manzl's third local documentary. He's also made films on Brackendale and the logging industry.
