Athletes break Squamish Tri records

A change of course for the bike leg of the annual Squamish Triathlon helped male and female athletes set new records on Sunday, while three men cracked the two-hour mark.

It was an Olympic distance race with a 1,500 metre lake swim on Alice Lake, followed by a 37 km road race, and a 10 km trail run on the Ray Peters trail opposite Don Ross Secondary School.

Olly Piggin, better known for his Ironman performances, placed first overall in the race as well as first in men's 30 to 34 age category. He was 10 th out of the water, almost three minutes back of Vancouver's Facundo Chernikoff, but followed up with a 56-minute cycle that lowered the record time by a full 23 seconds. That put him in third place heading into the run, which he also won with a time of 36:07, 1:28 faster than third place finisher David Roulston of Vancouver. Piggin's final time was 1:54:38. He was followed by Chernikoff in 1:56:23 and Roulston in 1:58:39. Chernikoff also placed first in the male 25 to 29 race.

Vancouver's Rachel McBride placed first in the women's category with the second-fastest swim of the day. She then went on to beat Melanie McQuaid's record on the bike leg by eight seconds, with a time of 1:04:06. Her run time was 45:39, propelling her to first place with a total time of 2:10:37. Susanne Russell of Vancouver was second in 2:11:44, and Britni Bakk of Point Roberts third in 2:18:42.

The fastest athlete from the corridor was Squamish's Chris Bishop, who placed fourth in the male 35 to 39 race in 2:11:21.

The fastest local female was Whistler's Marie-Anne Prevost, who placed first in the women's 35 to 39 category with a time of 2:19:15. It was only Prevost's second major race since starting a family last fall, and she did it after jockeying for the lead with Squamish's Amy Caldwell for most of the race. Caldwell finished two spots back and second in the 35 to 39 category in 2:19:58.

Also from Whistler, Cristina McKean was second in the female 25 to 29 race in 2:24:52.

Marla Zucht just missed the podium in 35 to 39, finishing fourth in 2:26:44.

Bob Deeks was sixth in male 45 to 49 in 2:28:21.

Karen Blaylock was first in women's 50 to 54 in 2:30:04.

Daniel Irvine was 15 th in male 30 to 34 in 2:37:35.

Keil Wretham was fifth in male 20 to 24 in 2:38:44.

Pascal Kirouac was 14 th in male 25 to 29 in 2:39:19.

Christopher Dentandt was 21 st in male 30 to 34 in 2:46:47.

Frank Piliar was 22 nd in male 30 to 34 in 2:50:08.

Jennifer Leigh was third in the women's Athena race in 2:50:52.

Michel Berthoud was 32 nd in male 35 to 39 in 2:53:30.

Katelyn Thompson was ninth in female 25 to 29 in 2:54:34.

Tom Barratt was seventh in male 55 to 59 in 2:55:45.

Robyn Pook was 10 th in female 25 to 29 in 2:56:00.

Louise Meldgard was third in female 50 to 54 in 2:58:32.

Stephanie Askwith was 12 th in female 25 to 29 in 3:03:32.

Patrick McCurdy was third in male 60 to 64 in 3:08:37.

Kimberly Allan was fifth in Athena in 3:09:30.

Corinne Cowden was fifth in female 45 to 49 in 3:09:39.

From Pemberton, Natalie Wood was sixth in female 30 to 34 in 2:36:59.

The relay was also extremely competitive this year. Whistler's The Route of Evil - Duncan Munro swim, Greg McDonnell bike and Craig Johnson Run - placed first out of 15 male teams with a combined time of 2:03:52. Munro was third on the swim, McDonnell first on the bike, and Johnson second on the run.

The Squamish team of Charuk, Ross and TrueLove - Mike Truelove swim, Mike Charuk bike and Jason Ross run - were second in that category, followed by Team Whistler Core - David Higgins swim, Jean-Francois Plouffe bike, and John Blok run.

In the women's relay, the Whistler team of Lizzie Sandwich - Christine Suter swim, Liz Cullen bike and Christine Cogger run - placed first in 2:21:54, followed by Whistler's 3 Rumps 6 Lumps in 2:31:02, and Squamish's Die TRI-ing in 2:33:14.

In the mixed relay category The Incredibles from Squamish - Vlasta Dusil swim, Louie Soave bike and Roger Shirt run - placed first in 2:06:14. They wee followed by Hammertime from Vancouver in 2:09:09 and Lactic Acid from Saltspring Island in 2:18:09.
