Part of Blackcomb Mountain went up in flames this afternoon around 3 p.m.

Plumes of smoke rose from the northwest area of Crystal Ridge and were visible from the base of the mountain and as far away as Nesters and Function Junction.

Whistler Blackcomb first got word of the fire just minutes before 3 p.m., and evacuation of the mountain started at 3:15 p.m. for all crew members, sightseers and anyone else in danger, said Amber Turnau, spokesperson for Whistler Blackcomb.

B.C. Forest Service is involved. Helicopters and water bombers are dropping water onto the fire, and larger water bombers should arrive shortly to help get the fire under control.

There are also reports of an evacuation order for residents of Whistler Blackcomb's staff housing on Glacier Lane.

More information to come shortly.
